Dolores Huerta, the labor leader who co-founded the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez and championed California farmworkers' rights for over half a century, died Wednesday morning at her Bakersfield home at age 96, according to her family and foundation. The New York Times, citing a family spokesperson, reported she died of cancer. Huerta grew up in Stockton, attended what is now San Joaquin Delta College, and built her career in the Central Valley, including serving as a lead negotiator during the Delano grape strike (1965–1970). California elected officials, including Gov. Gavin Newsom and Sacramento Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes, issued statements mourning her death.

The Arvin City Council is considering a proposed site development permit and development agreement for a commercial cannabis storage and processing facility by Leef Arvin LLC at 818 South Derby Street. The project would convert an existing warehouse and cold storage facility into a cannabis operation, adding 12 large storage containers to the property. Consultant planner Isaiah Medina said the facility would create approximately 12 full-time jobs initially, plus around 16 seasonal part-time employees during harvest season. Cannabis stored in Arvin would be transported to Willits in Northern California for extraction into oils used by leading California cannabis brands. The proposal still requires a formal vote by council members before proceeding.
