Central Sierra Passes Reopened Friday, Oct. 23 After First Winter Storm

Caltrans reopened Highway 108 to Sonora Pass and Highway 4 to Ebbetts Pass on Friday, while the National Park Service reopened Highway 120 and Tioga Pass in Yosemite National Park. All three passes had been closed Wednesday as a precaution before the first significant storm of the 2026-27 winter season, which brought eight-tenths of an inch to more than 1 inch of rain to Sonora, Pinecrest, Greeley Hill, and Buck Meadows. Snow totals included 1 inch at Ebbetts Pass and a half-inch at Tuolumne Meadows, with no measurable snow at Sonora or Tioga passes. The storm's precipitation equaled 50% of average for the date in the new water year, while 72% of California including all of Calaveras and Tuolumne counties remained abnormally dry. Sunny skies with highs in the high 60s to low 70s were expected through at least Tuesday.

Tuolumne County Planning Commission Gathers Input on Potential Data Center Regulations

More than 60 residents attended Wednesday's Tuolumne County Planning Commission meeting, where county staff sought input on how to regulate any future data centers at the direction of the Board of Supervisors. Commissioners discussed approaches including conditional use permits requiring public hearings, CEQA compliance, and tiered criteria based on facility size. Multiple residents urged an outright ban, citing concerns about water use, noise, environmental impacts, and rural character.
