Jackson Hole Pronghorn Count Reaches 122, First Year Above 100 Since Population Crash
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department's August count found about 122 pronghorn summering in Jackson Hole this year, the first time since 2021 that the segment exceeded 100 animals. A pneumonia outbreak and severe winter in 2023 killed 89% of the Jackson Hole portion of the Sublette Pronghorn Herd, dropping counts to 79 does and 10 fawns before a slow recovery through 2024 (84) and 2025 (66). Wildlife managers attribute the segment's sluggish rebound to its tiny breeding population, higher predator pressure, and migration hazards including fences, roads, and river crossings. The Jackson segment now represents just 0.26% of the overall herd, down from 1.6% before the crash, though the full Sublette herd reached 25,250 animals last year.
