Chapel Hill Council to Vote on LUMO Rewrite Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.
On Oct. 21, the Chapel Hill Town Council held its final public hearing on a draft update to the Land Use Management Ordinance, which has governed development in town since 2003. Residents voiced hopes for increased housing supply and concerns about environmental impacts and traffic as Chapel Hill's population grew 2.8 percent from 2020 to 2024 amid a median home value near $622,000 against a median income of $85,989. The proposed ordinance targets the "missing middle" housing gap and includes stronger native-plant targets and downstream flood-impact requirements. The council will meet again on Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. to potentially adopt the updated LUMO.
