Hendersonville Completes First Phase of Mud Creek Flood Reduction Project
The city of Hendersonville, N.C., held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, Oct. 30, to mark completion of the first phase of the Lower Mud Creek Floodplain Restoration and Flood Risk Reduction Project. The project reconnects Mud Creek and its tributaries with the surrounding floodplain, adding approximately 20 acre-feet of flood storage expected to reduce flood risks for as many as 93 nearby properties. Work included about 2,300 linear feet of tributary stream restoration, 1,500 linear feet of channel restoration on Mud Creek, 8.5 acres of wetland restoration, and about 9.2 acres of riparian floodplain restoration. NC DEQ Secretary D. Reid Wilson attended the ceremony, noting the project supports western North Carolina's recovery from Hurricane Helene.
