Sutter, Butte Counties Rank Among California's Highest for Fentanyl Deaths
Preliminary 2025 California Department of Public Health data released Monday ranked Sutter County ninth and Butte County sixth in fentanyl death rates statewide. Sutter County's rate was 20.6 per 100,000 residents—double the statewide average of 10.4—with deaths rising from 14 in 2024 to 18 in 2025. A Special Investigations Unit formed by the Sutter County Sheriff's Office and Yuba City Police Department in July has seized approximately 425 grams of powder fentanyl and 6,000 pills. The county's Community Overdose Prevention Efforts team distributed more than 1,200 Narcan kits across Sutter County in 2025.
