NOAA forecasts a 75% chance that the 2026 El Niño will be the strongest since at least 1950, with equatorial ocean surface temperatures already 4°C above average and subsurface waters 10°C warmer than normal. UCSB climate scientists Samantha Stevenson, Libe Washburn, and Charles Lester identify Downtown Santa Barbara's Mission Creek estuary and the Goleta Slough near the airport as areas prone to repeat flooding this winter, while fire-scarred hillsides face elevated landslide risk. Wetter conditions are predicted to peak February through April 2027, with atmospheric rivers steering heavy moisture toward Southern California. Residents are urged to clean gutters and drainages, obtain sandbags if flood-prone, and review their neighborhood's history during past El Niño events.

UC Santa Barbara's shoreline adaptation team is soliciting community feedback through an online survey ahead of a public meeting scheduled for Nov. 5 to shape detailed strategies for managing sea-level rise impacts on campus bluffs, berms, and coastal infrastructure. The plan, approved by the California Coastal Commission and funded by the State Coastal Conservancy, assumes up to 6.6 feet of sea-level rise by century's end and covers the university's entire footprint in Santa Barbara and Goleta. Recent interim measures include rerouting a cliff-top pathway near Anacapa Hall inland for safety and stabilizing the Campus Point Beach berm with sandbags after severe erosion over two rainy seasons. The team is weighing tradeoffs such as maintaining roads and buildings versus preserving natural shoreline migration, beach width, and lagoon function.
