200+ Detained in Fresno-Area ICE Raids Since Early October

More than 200 people have been detained since early October amid ICE operations in the Fresno area, according to Nora Zaragoza-Yáñez, program manager at Faith in the Valley's watch network. The reported escalation, linked to what the Washington Examiner called "Operation Safe California," was expected to last 45 days from its Oct. 7 report. Since September, 8,411 habeas corpus petitions have been filed in the Eastern District of California, the highest rate nationally per a Propublica analysis. A federal judge recently barred ICE agents across Southern California from detaining people solely based on Latino appearance or perceived working-class status. Faith in the Valley volunteers assist released individuals at ICE offices in Fresno and Bakersfield with travel logistics to return home.

Fresno County Voter Turnout Rising Ahead of Tuesday, Nov. 3 Election Day

Fresno County Clerk James Kus reported that early voter turnout is climbing and tracking near the middle of recent gubernatorial election participation levels as Tuesday's midterm election approaches. On Oct. 23, the Trump Justice Department delivered a demand letter to Kus naming 670 registered voters who federal officials claim — without evidence — may not be U.S. citizens, requesting personal records and ballot segregation. Kus said the federal government has been silent since the letter arrived and that it has not impacted ongoing registration or voting processes. Fresno County is operating 54 vote centers and 69 ballot drop boxes to assist voters before Election Day.

Fresno Council Candidate Demands State DOJ Probe Ahead of Tuesday Election

Fresno City Council candidate Naindeep Singh held a news conference Monday demanding California Attorney General Rob Bonta investigate his Oct. 24 DUI-of-drugs arrest, which police quashed days later after toxicology reports confirmed no drugs in his system. Singh's attorney Kevin Little alleged the circumstances were "strongly suggestive of election interference," noting the arrest occurred 10 days before polls close. Police Chief Mindy Casto issued a public apology but said there was no political or racial motive behind the arrest. The Fresno City Attorney's Office has refused to release body camera footage citing an ongoing investigation, despite the chief stating the case is closed.

Six Noncitizens Charged with Allegedly Voting Illegally in 2024 Election

A Fresno resident and five others from across California were charged with allegedly voting illegally in the Nov. 5, 2024 presidential election, according to a U.S. Attorney's Office news release announcing six criminal complaints against noncitizens. Named defendants include residents of Fresno, Hanford, Visalia, Turlock, Vallejo and Sacramento; court appearances occurred Friday (Oct. 30) and Monday (Nov. 2). Prosecutors announced 28 arrests on Oct. 19 amid a federal-state dispute over a list of 20,000 registered voters the administration says might not be citizens. The Trump Administration sent a letter Oct. 23 threatening potential prosecution of Fresno County officials who do not cooperate with federal requests for voter-fraud evidence; critics called it an effort to sow doubt in California elections. If convicted, defendants face up to one year in prison and fines of up to $100,000.

Locally Owned Tacos El Gordo Opens in Fresno

Tacos El Gordo opened in late September at 4065 E. Ashlan Ave. in Fresno, next to Save Mart near Cedar Avenue, causing drivers to confuse it with the San Diego–originated chain known for Las Vegas locations.
