The Fresno Police Department's Office of Independent Review released its first 2026 report this week after more than a year without quarterly reviews, following the August 2025 retirement of auditor John Gliatta. The report shows six officers were fired, 52 were suspended for a combined 3,020 hours, and two resigned in cases culminating this year. Among reviewed incidents, an officer's Jan. 1 fatal shooting of a pit bull attacking a woman and her smaller dog was found within policy. The report also details sustained misconduct findings including data-access violations, false statements to supervisors, and a dispatcher's domestic violence case.

Fresno-area immigration advocates are calling for identification requirements for federal agents after a federal appeals court on Oct. 14 upheld the invalidation of California's SB 627, which would have barred ICE officers from wearing masks while on duty. At an Oct. 19 United San Joaquin assembly, residents recounted incidents including a traffic stop near Shields and West where a man in plain clothes claimed affiliation with a fictional 'Kerman County Parole' agency. Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni urged residents to correctly identify law enforcement personnel, noting social media videos have misidentified sheriff's deputies as ICE agents. Mayor Jerry Dyer called for a unified local response while acknowledging limits on challenging federal immigration enforcement.
