Solano County Supervisors Discuss El Niño Storm Readiness Tuesday

The Solano County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday to review preparations for potential heavy rain and flooding tied to a strong El Niño pattern this fall and winter. The National Weather Service predicts a nearly 100% chance of a strong El Niño, though Emergency Services Manager Robyn Rains noted that only two of six such events since 1950 produced wetter-than-normal Northern California winters. Gov. Gavin Newsom has proclaimed a state of emergency to facilitate resource movement, but Rains cautioned the county received no direct funding from the proclamation. The Solano County Water Agency declared a local emergency for storm season, with high tides and winter king tides expected to compound flooding risks. County staff are inspecting roofs, gutters, bridges, and drainage systems; testing backup generators; and installing temporary pumps at the Clay Street facility.
