Over 1,000 Birds Killed or Injured in Chicago-Area Building Collisions Oct. 18-19

More than 1,000 birds were killed or injured after colliding with buildings in the Chicago area during fall migration on Saturday and Sunday, October 18-19, according to Chicago Bird Collision Monitors. Most rescues occurred in downtown Chicago and on Northwestern University's Evanston campus, with the DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center receiving 274 birds Saturday and 60 more Sunday from downtown collisions alone. Advocates say the event underscores the need for a pending Bird-Friendly Building Design Ordinance introduced by Ald. Maria Hadden in March, which has moved to the zoning committee led by Ald. Gilbert Villegas but remains unresolved. Northwestern University said it is implementing active and passive strategies to reduce bird collisions on campus, noting an increase over the weekend it attributed to a windstorm.
