The U.S. Supreme Court issued an unsigned ruling Monday rejecting a Trump administration emergency petition seeking to set aside ballots of 20,000 alleged noncitizens in California's midterm elections. The filing came one day before Election Day and had already been rebuffed three times by lower federal courts. Santa Barbara County identified 180 names on the DOJ list; county elections chief Joe Holland declined to make a public statement, while DA John Savrnoch stated he had no intention of investigating citizenship claims. A DOJ letter demanded verification within 48 hours and threatened legal liability for non-compliance, which Judge David O. Carter cautioned could chill voter participation.
