The Federal Trade Commission and North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson joined a multi-state complaint alleging Dollar General raised prices without updating shelf labels, causing customers to pay more at checkout than displayed. Jackson's office said the company failed thousands of pricing audits in North Carolina and received nearly 30,000 complaints about pricing discrepancies. The NC Department of Agriculture recently fined 10 Dollar General stores, including locations in Transylvania and Buncombe counties; inspections found nearly 400 pricing inaccuracies, with 32 of nearly 300 items overpriced at a Swannanoa store. North Carolina has more than 1,150 Dollar General locations, the second-highest count in the country. Jackson's office urged shoppers to check receipts before leaving stores and provided complaint contact information for the NC Department of Agriculture Standards Division.

An Asheville drag queen known as Nova says her likeness was used without permission in an AI-generated political ad paid for by the National Republican Congressional Committee and approved by Republican NC-11 candidate Jennifer Balkcom. The ad depicts Nova dancing with Democratic candidate Jamie Ager, whom she says she has never met. Nova sent a cease-and-desist letter to Balkcom's campaign, and attorney Mike Tadych said misappropriation claims are possible but political ads enjoy strong First Amendment protection. North Carolina has no law requiring political advertisements to disclose AI-generated content, according to Western Carolina University political science chair Dr. Chris Cooper.
