Boca Raton Sends $125M Police Bond to March 9 Ballot; Zervis Named Interim Manager

The Boca Raton City Council voted 4-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 27, to place a $125 million general obligation bond on the March 9, 2027 ballot to fund a new police headquarters, 911 communications center, evidence storage, and a dedicated downtown police facility, costing approximately $100.92 per year for the average residential property. The council also named Deputy City Manager and CFO James "Jim" Zervis as interim city manager effective Wednesday, Oct. 28, following City Manager Mark Sohaney's resignation announced Oct. 16 with an effective date of Nov. 11. A separate resolution confirmed that the city's 25-foot height limit for single-family homes does not permit additional living floors in roof space, applying to applications first submitted on or after Oct. 27 while grandfathering earlier active submissions. The council also approved a site plan amendment for The Bertani at Broken Sound, an eight-story, 60-unit apartment building at 5901 and 6001 NW Broken Sound Parkway.

Florida Flu Season Starts Early; Broward Schools Launch Cardiac Safety Initiative

The Walgreens Flu Index shows Florida as a flu hot spot as of Oct. 19, with a score of 4.32 versus the national average of 2.31, and Broward and Palm Beach counties reporting higher case counts week over week. The season is dominated by an H1N1 strain with a gene mutation aiding immune evasion, though this year's vaccine targets that strain. In response to cardiac emergencies in young athletes, Broward County Public Schools launched the Heart Safe Certified School initiative on Oct. 19 with Nicklaus Children's Hospital and Project ADAM, aiming to certify every traditional school by end of 2027. Separately, Boca Raton Fire Rescue now equips firefighter-paramedics with whole blood for field use, and the South Florida Proton Therapy Institute in Delray Beach faces a proposed federal Medicare reimbursement cut of about 30% affecting its primarily Medicare patient population.

E11even Cofounder Urges Opposition to Islamic Center Projects in Palm Beach County

Real estate investor Marc Roberts sent a mass email on Oct. 21 urging recipients to contact Gov. Ron DeSantis to oppose Islamic center projects in Delray Beach, Loxahatchee, West Palm Beach and Vero Beach, according to The Real Deal. The Delray Beach project, approved in 2023 and including a school, day care and mosque, has drawn repeated protests at City Commission meetings; an Oct. 3 meeting ended with swastika-wearing demonstrators shouting anti-semitic slurs in the county civic center's parking lot, per WPBF reports. Interfaith leaders, including Boca Raton Interfaith Clergy Association co-president Rabbi David Steinhardt, publicly defended the project participants, citing decades of community involvement. Roberts' attorney did not respond to requests for comment.
