Big Bear Eagle Jackie Died of Avian Influenza; Necropsy Results Released
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, and Ojai Raptor Center confirmed that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was the primary cause of death for Jackie, a female bald eagle from Big Bear Valley. Jackie was rescued July 18 after a fight with two other eagles on the shores of Big Bear Lake and died Aug. 10; her remains were cremated per bird flu transmission guidelines. The virus was particularly pronounced in California in 2024, reaching its height in December when Gov. Newsom declared a state of emergency over rising infections. Jackie's mate, Shadow, remains at Big Bear and has been observed with a new potential mate named Kaydee.
