Wabanaki Signs Removed from Acadia National Park Summit
Interpretive markers explaining the sacred significance of Cadillac Mountain to the Wabanaki people were removed from Acadia National Park in Maine. The removal was part of a federal campaign to strip national parks of materials deemed disparaging to American history, affecting signs developed through partnerships with Indigenous groups. A coalition of conservation and history organizations has filed a lawsuit to restore the removed exhibits, which also included information on climate change. Park officials and Wabanaki representatives state that the erasure undermines decades of trust-building and co-stewardship efforts.
