Customers reported difficulty accessing storefronts due to dirt walkways, metal grates, and limited parking. Both businesses said they will remain open and urged residents heading downtown to be cautious of the walkways.

Dolores Huerta Remembered at Bakersfield Vigil; Public Memorial Planned

More than 100 people gathered Wednesday night at the future site of the Dolores Huerta Peace and Justice Cultural Center in Bakersfield to honor farm labor and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, who died earlier in the week at age 96. Family members Emilio Huerta and Lori de Leon spoke at the vigil, urging attendees to honor her legacy by voting in upcoming elections. The Fox Theatre added a tribute to Huerta on its marquee Thursday morning, and community members continued adding candles to the memorial through Thursday afternoon. Governor Gavin Newsom ordered flags at state buildings flown at half-staff in her memory. The family plans a private funeral and a public memorial with details to be announced later.
