Bakersfield Council Sets Aside $4 Million to Explore Housing Low-Level Offenders
The Bakersfield City Council voted unanimously to set aside $4 million to explore housing low-level offenders in response to a persistent jail bed shortage. City officials state that the lack of detention space limits accountability for crimes such as vandalism and theft, as many individuals are released within the day despite increased police staffing. The initiative aims to determine if the city can provide detention and treatment opportunities for those committing Prop 36-eligible offenses. Staff will develop a plan detailing costs, jurisdiction, and liability for future council discussion.
