PSPS Shutoffs Leave Kern River Valley, Tehachapi Without Power; Restoration Expected Saturday

Public safety power shutoffs by Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas and Electric have left the Kern River Valley, Tehachapi, areas east of Bakersfield, and communities south of Arvin without electricity amid wildfire risk from gusty winds, dry vegetation, and above-average temperatures. Residents reported gas stations, grocery stores, and other businesses closed due to the outage on Friday afternoon. PG&E spokesperson Jeff Smith said crews are monitoring wind pockets with dry vegetation to balance customer restoration against fire hazard. Edison outage maps indicate power is expected to return in the Kern River Valley and Tehachapi areas on Saturday, though crews must patrol circuits for damage before re-energizing.

Bakersfield Woman Arrested in Shootings at KBAK/KBFX TV Station

Bakersfield police arrested Thomashana Renee Zeigler, 46, of Bakersfield, on Oct. 15 in connection with two shootings targeting the KBAK/KBFX television news station on Oct. 9 and Oct. 13. During the second incident, investigators found multiple bullet strikes on the building and recovered 11 shell casings from a handgun; three employees were inside but no one was injured. Officers stopped Zeigler's vehicle as she traveled toward the station and found a loaded .40-caliber handgun and an additional loaded magazine. Police say search warrants led to recovery of additional firearms and evidence, and that detectives uncovered further threats directed at the station. Authorities state the arrest helped prevent a potential additional shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
