Trump Administration Sues California, LA County Over Alleged Noncitizen Voter Registration Ahead of Nov. 3 Election

The Trump administration filed a lawsuit against California and Los Angeles County on Thursday, seeking to prevent election officials from counting ballots from approximately 20,000 registered voters alleged to be noncitizens, 19 days before the Nov. 3 general election. Federal prosecutors gave LA County Registrar-Recorder Dean Logan and Secretary of State Shirley Weber 48 hours to verify citizenship on a provided list or set aside those ballots; Logan declined to review the data citing an unsecure format. The lawsuit follows grand jury subpoenas issued to LA County, Orange County, and San Diego County elections offices seeking voter registration records. Gov. Gavin Newsom condemned the action as voter suppression, noting the National Voter Registration Act prohibits purging rolls within 90 days of an election. California's mail-ballot system means all registered voters have already received their Nov. 3 ballots.
