Thornton Nature Library Offers Free Outdoor Gear and Programming
The Anythink Nature Library in Thornton, Colorado, described as the nation's first public nature library, offers visitors access to gardens, trail systems, and outdoor play spaces including boulders and a mud pit. The 140-acre facility provides 1,500 Try-Its—rentable items such as hiking poles, snowshoes, and bird-watching kits available free with a library card. Executive director Mark Fink said the project grew out of 15 years of outdoor programming across seven Anythink Libraries in Adams County. The library also hosts programming like a roots-and-rhythms workshop where children create music from natural sounds.
